WebSphere Portal Enable for iSeries provides a single point of access to the applications, content, processes and people in your network from diverse sources and systems. WebSphere Portal Enable includes a portal framework, which provides facilities for integrating the portal with applications and data sources, management of administration tasks such as portal membership, and also connectivity and presentation services. Presentation services let you customize your computing desktop to match your own work patterns and needs. You can also configure your portal to present content on different device types such as laptops and mobile phones. The flow and display of information to a portal user's view is controlled by portlets running within WebSphere Portal. Portlets are the integration code that connects applications and data to the portal. Connectivity services give you access to company data, newsfeeds, or other external networks such as your trading partner's applications. Customisation functions in WebSphere Portal Enable allow portal users to select which applications they view and how they wish to view them. WebSphere Portal Enable includes a great many portlets for accessing applications such as e-mail, calendars, collaboration, and syndicated news. In keeping with its commitment to open standards, IBM provides a portlet application programming interface (API) so you easily extend portlet function. WebSphere Portal Enable provides "single sign-on" which means portal users avoid having to sign on to each individual application that they access through the portal. Logons to WebSphere Portal Enable pass through an authentication layer that provides portal access control. If the logon is authenticated, a "single sign-on" component stores user information for later use by other programs that require authentication.
